每个学校的essay package不论怎么变化,总少不了1-2篇,甚至更多关于leadership的essays。那么Leadership Essay该怎么写?不该怎么写?这里就和大家探讨下我的想法。

 

1、如何找到Leadership Style

 

自上而下

 

所谓自上而下,就是说,在写Leadership Essay之前,先想想我这个人是个什么样的人,我最想表现给学校的品质是什么。先抛开具体的故事本身,想象下自己是个什么样的人。甚至可以采访一下你的朋友们,同事们。问问他们觉得你这个人最珍贵的品质是什么。先给自己一个定位,然后再想具体的故事。在明确了大的基调的情况下, 我们才来决定故事的选取。

 

举例而言:

 

1)我这个人擅长跟人合作,非常有同情心,将心比心。我会设身处地替人着想,很能调和矛盾;

 

2)我这个人非常乐观,积极向上。在团队里是一个cheer leader,啦啦队长,team跟着我很有干劲等等。

 

自下而上

 

另一种方法是自下而上,就是把你一生中的故事摊在桌子上。我相信,许多人一开始, 是从bottom up开始的,把自己的经历罗列一遍,然后想我写哪个story。在list出来这些story之后,要不断的反复问自己:这真的是表现我这个Personality的最好的例子吗?

 

举例而言:

 

比如,我小时候得过一个重病,慢性的,身体很差。写这个故事,我当时希望体现我的坚韧,因为我坚持治疗,坚持锻炼,不但没有耽误课程,还成为了品学兼优的Top Student。

 

写完这个story后,我就不断的问自己,坚韧是我最优秀的品质吗?这个例子是否是最能体现我坚韧的例子?这个例子是如何在今后的人生中塑造了我?等等。用这样穷举的方式挑选出最终的Leadership Essay的最适合的素材。

 

2、领导力的五个层次

 

享誉世界的领导力和人际关系大师John C.Maxwell曾经写过一个本书《5 Levels of Leadership》书里他对领导力是这么定义的,可以归纳成:

 

1. 职位——人们追随你是因为他们非听你不可

 

2. 认同——人们追随你是因为他们愿意听你的

 

3. 生产——人们追随你是因为你对组织所做的贡献

 

4. 立人——人们追随你是因为你对他们所付出的

 

5. 巅峰——人们追随你是因为谁也难以企及你所代表的文化和思想

 

3、领导力如何选材

 

建议大家在写Leadership Essay之前,多做一些research。这里的research既包括在网上多看些别人关于Leadership定义的文章;而更多的是,多research下自己。例如,你认为confidence很重要,你的优秀品质之一是confident。你可以google一下英文的论文,confidence是什么、来源是什么,对自己和团队有什么影响,为什么一个confident的人更能成为好的leader,一个好的leader好何帮助别人建立confident。这样,如果你写essay时,讲了自己如何帮助别人建立confident的故事,就会成为一篇有深度的essay。

 

我必须再一次强调,essay is the most critical part of your application, and the understanding of leadership is the critical of the critical。

 

那么一篇能体现leadership的好essay,到底应该包含哪些要素呢?下面和大家一起讨论:

 

1. 困难大且不失可信度

 

困难要巨大,困难不巨大,也要写出巨大性。要把意义写出来。因为只有在这样的一个setting下,才能突出你的leadership ability。如果,不拿困难度来衬托的话,谁都可以achieve到,也就体现不出你的伟大和高明之处了。

 

2. 能体现一种重要的leadership风格

 

不能是泛泛的牛,而是表现你领导力的特质。例如说坚韧 persistent。但是,只是persistent这个词太普通了。比如以前看到一位成功申请人写道的这样的一个素材:大公司想要媒体报道他们的捐赠, 而媒体又不敢违反中央规定, 不敢在奥运期间发头版头条, 我就带领团队和不同的媒体与公司沟通, 几天几夜不睡搜寻案例, 找方法。

 

最后的解决方案是:

 

1)我们组织了一批有创意的活动, 把灾区的事放到奥运的大背景中, 例如, 找了个公司TCL捐了50台电视给孩子们, 让灾区的孩子们也能开奥运, 用奥运精神鼓励他们, 到捐赠现场的时候, 孩子们唱着北京欢迎你, 中央来的记者们全哭了.

 

2)我们想办法规避中央的限制, 我们建立了自己的网站, 和许多大网站交换链接, 去BBS上发软文, 做直邮投递等。

 

这里面,不光讲出了自己的leadership的actions,还重点强调了自己是个什么样的style。建议大家去看看HBS 65篇的范文,虽然比较老,但是你都能从一篇篇的leadership essay中看出来,申请者的风格是什么。

 

3. 要写清楚你的角色和做了什么

 

因为这是一篇关于你自己的essay。所以要突出你的形象和R&R。比如,刚才举的那个例子。2008年捐电视看奥运的活动,需要在文章中整理出来自己的actions。我怎么带领同学们不气馁, 我怎么积极地和捐助方沟通, 我怎么在三天里不吃不睡地访问了媒体相关的专家, 打了XXX家媒体的电话, 弄明白媒体想要什么等等。

 

4. 素材突出你的impact,但语调要humble

 

最后,最直接的方式就是直接的说出你的impact:最后你怎么成功了, 得了多少钱, 多少人心, 多少奖励, 帮助了多少人等等。当然,在这个过程中,语调要humble, 谦逊。这一点, 大家可能会意外. 但是, 你细读成功人的范文, 都不是那种一味自夸我怎么了不起的.大家都强调,我之成功,我之骄傲,在于,我带领了一个团队,我帮助到了别人,而不是一味我牛。

5、Essay应该一波三折

 

Leadership Essay应该一波三折。其实你前面的困难1,2,3;和后面的actions 4,5,6都没有白写,只要把他们打乱下顺序;再增加个之间的递进关系,一篇核心的leadership essay就搞定了。

 

为什么要一波三折?!

 

因为要增加故事的可读性,让你的文章,以至写文章的这个applicant都变得interesting起来。这样,Adcom的人才愿意在众多的文章中选中你的,给你面试机会,想进一步看看这到底是个什么样的人。怎么样一波三折?!在写作的过程中,你可以把自己想象成一个电影的编剧。比如,一个superman和一个evil决斗,evil很坏(困难点1),superman费了很多血才把evil打倒在地(action1);眼看着胜利在望,又出现了天外来客,evil的帮凶(困难点2),superman不得已掏出自己的兵器(action2),打退了evil和帮凶;别人都以为superman这时迎来的应该是鲜花和掌声,但恰恰相反,大家都误会他破坏花花草草(困难点3),于是superman就开始使用各种各样的技巧persuade大家(action3),最后得到了荣誉好市民称号(achievement)。至此,故事就结束了!是不是比起将困难点和actions累积的方式,显得精彩的多啊?!

 

Leadership Essay其实很好写,因为就是讲故事。但如果说有一点最难写的,那就是最后的ending,你对leadership的理解 -- Leadership Essay的“制高点”。你对leadership的定义和总结,才是体现你的高度和深度的地方。

 

6、Leadership的制高点

 

Leadership is defined as ‘the process in which an individual influences the group of individuals to attain a common goal’. The goal is attained by mutual cooperation and cohesive behaviour. A leader infuses a sense of positivity and directs others to reach the specified goal.

 

Various theories since years have been formulated by psychologists to explain the traits of a leader. Certain traits of a good leader were listed by the researchers as: intelligence, extraversion, and adjustment, openness to experience, general self-efficacy and conscientiousness. It has been inferred that an individual possessing these traits results as a good leader.

 

Another theory suggests that great events lead an ordinary individual to emerge as a leader. Then there is a third theory which emphasises that leadership is a transformation or a process. Anyone can become a leader by learning the leadership skills.

 

A leader is someone who stands not only for his cause but takes responsibility and motivates other individuals also. There is a clear difference between being a boss and a leader. A leader is a motivation for others and inspires individuals to aim high and attain that aim. However a boss only supervises over his subordinates. Power naturally comes to a leader but that power is not a tool of leader.

 

Rather if one tries to control the circumstances with power it turns out to be authoritarian or even suppressive in its expression.

 

Leadership is not a quality but it is an individual’s behaviour. A leader showcases a positive attitude and high self esteem. He assertively works towards the goal but never gets pushy for it. A continuous self study, training, evaluation and imbibing positive things in life develop the characteristics of a leader.

 

Situations are never in our hands but reaction is always that we can control. A leader not only reacts positively but also helps other members of the group to see the brighter side of the picture.

 

It has also been noticed that only those persons are considered as good leaders who have gained the trust and confidence of their subordinates. Communication plays a vital role in this regard. The other thing that people respect is knowledge.

 

Proficiency in subject is the main driving force. The next factor is the execution of idea. A leader always executes the things effectively. He works as a team and team welfare is his primary goal. A leader is looked upon by his subordinates critically also. A man of high moral values and integrity can only become a good leader.

 

It has always been a matter of controversy as to what makes an individual different from others. Some emphasise that is an innate quality while some advocate that it is a matter of practice only. To sum up, leadership is a quality which is if present naturally is welcome or otherwise can be developed by acquiring desired skills
